Industrial area and business property owners in central business districts (CBDs) are charged a litter picking levy to keep the streets around them clean.
The levy is not charged to residential customers, and their domestic waste tariff as reflected on their municipal account will remain.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said: “The City of Ekurhuleni strives to create environmentally friendly spaces in residential and industrial areas. Waste removal is a key service to ratepayers to ensure that they live in a clean environment.
“The service is paid for through waste removal tariffs and other special tariffs such as bulk container removal or sundry tariffs such as for animal carcass removal.
“In built-up areas, such as industrial areas and town CBDs, there is more litter than the city is required to clean outside ratepayers’ properties. The cleaning is done through litter picking and cleaning streets. To safeguard these services, the city charges industrial area and business property owners a litter picking levy,” he added.
The litter picking levy of R11.46 per square metre of the property for services rendered at least once a week is charged for normal litter picking in identified areas with a maximum of R2 301.91 a month, in spite of the waste generated by the individual properties.
The said amount contributes to collection, transportation and disposal costs thereof.
