Casa Caritas opens charity shop to help fill financial holes

Closet empty? Don't feel blue. Visit Something Blue to shop for a good cause.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The latter is no longer just part of a ritual for brides on their wedding days, but Casa Caritas’ very own second-hand store, Something Blue.

The store, located at Casa Caritas in Van Riebeeck Park, officially opened its blue door to customers on Wednesday morning.

“It was always my dream to open a second-hand store that is beautiful and classy,” said Adri Kruger, CEO of the home for mentally and physically challenged people.

Clothes (and other items) for a good cause. Something Blue has stylish items at a low price.

And that it is. Inside, the store is tastefully decorated. Even better is the fact that no items, except for a suit for R200, cost more than R50. These items include clothing for children and adults, shoes, jewellery, homeware and books.

Another pleasant element is that shoppers can enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of cake after they’ve browsed through the store.

Kruger hopes that Something Blue will initiate some much-needed cash for Casa Caritas, whic takes care of up to 49 severely handicapped people.

“We are suffering financially and desperately needed to find a new way to make money,” she said.

She added that she was grateful to everyone who donated items to make the store a reality.

“Without you, this would not be possible.”

Residents can visit the store on Tuesdays between 9am and noon and on Thursdays between noon and 3pm.
