Three new recruits join metro police on horseback

Three metro police officers became fully fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course under the tutelage of Pro Equestrian in Fairleads, Benoni.

The three recruits gained their badges on August 16 at a ceremony at the EMPD Equestrian Unit main office in Petit.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesperson, said the equestrian unit’s advent was in 2005 with only five members. Currently, the total complement is 15, including three women.

The equestrian unit forms part of the specialised units of the metro police whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety.

They may also be involved with other duties such as search and rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects.
