Ivory Park SAPS detectives have arrested a man from Kaalfontein for perjury after he opened a false case of car hijacking.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the 32-year-old suspect, who works as a taxi driver in Tembisa, reported he had been hijacked by unknown people in Tembisa last month.
“Investigations commenced soon after the case was opened and it soon emerged that there was no hijacking that took place. Following tireless follow-ups, the police managed to establish the information supplied by the suspect differed a lot with the vehicle’s movements on the day of the alleged hijacking.
“When confronted with the discrepancies in his statement the taxi driver admitted to having fabricated a hijacking, and that the actual story was that he borrowed the taxi to one of his friends who never returned it,” said Matimulane.
Matimulane added the other driver said the vehicle has been stolen.
“The suspect, fearing the fallout from his recklessness, cooked up a story at the Ivory Park SAPS, thus sending the police on a wild goose chase,” said Matimulane.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has strongly condemned this behaviour.
“Opening a false case is a serious offence, and the police are going to treat this matter as such. We intend dealing with this matter in such a way that whoever plans to hatch these ideas will have to think properly before going ahead,” said Ngcobo.
The man is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face the charge levelled against him.
