Mobile tax unit comes to Midrand

It is important to submit within the deadline to avoid unnecessary penalties due to late submission.

Individual taxpayers can enjoy a free, no obligation income tax return service offered by the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), in collaboration with the South African Revenue Services (Sars).

Required documents

To submit their tax returns, taxpayers must bring their proof of identity, such as an ID book, driver’s licence or passport; proof of income in the form of documents such as IRP5/IT3(a)/IT3(b) certificates; as well as supporting documents including medical aid contribution certificates, proof of medical expenses not paid by your medical aid, retirement annuity contribution certificates, travel logbook and completed confirmation of diagnosis of disability forms (ITR-DD) if you want to claim any disability expenses.

Some of the most common mistakes made are claiming expenses incurred for personal or domestic use, claiming for expenses that do not have verifiable proof (such as medical out of pocket expenses with no supporting documents, incorrect declaration of business kilometres when no logbook was physically maintained and no documentation for deductible expenses).

Dates to note:

• Non-provisional taxpayers who use e-filing or submit their returns electronically at a Sars branch have until October 31 to submit their tax returns.

• Provisional taxpayers who use e-filing have until January 31, 2019, to submit their returns.

• Taxpayers (both provisional and non-provisional) who file manually at a branch or post their returns have until September 21.

• It is important to submit within the deadline to avoid unnecessary penalties due to late submission. It is also important to be as honest as possible with your declaration.
