Human rights highlighted at Women’s Day celebration
The event, held at Winter’s Place in Jiyane Section, saw the attendance of advocate Brenda Makganyoha, from the Gauteng Department of Justice and Constitutional Development under Office of the Family, joined by Christina Maponya, of the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court, and Sipho Dalimfazwe, among others.
Ekurhuleni Social Club 2 observed Women’s Month under the patronage of all the ladies who are part of the social club.
The event, held at Winter’s Place in Jiyane Section, saw the attendance of advocate Brenda Makganyoha, from the Gauteng Department of Justice and Constitutional Development under Office of the Family, joined by Christina Maponya, of the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court, and Sipho Dalimfazwe, among others. Makganyoha highlighted issues about family disputes that are affecting children on a daily basis.
Makganyoha advised all the attendees about their parental rights and responsibilities.
“Parents should act as role models towards their children because children often mimic what the parents do rather than what the parents tell them to do,” said Makganyoha.
Maponya talked about maintenance matters.
She addressed both the men and women and what steps to take when they want to apply for child or spousal maintenance.
Meanwhile, Dalimfazwe spoke about domestic violence problems.
Dalimfazwe condemned parents to stop fighting in front of children.
He advised women to speak out about domestic violence and report abusers.
“Women should never be deceived by a man’s look because you cannot recognise whether this man is a domestic abuser or not. The olden days have contributed to the situation we are in today, where women used to tolerate several beatings. Women should not tolerate domestic violence. Do not wait for that man to beat you twice before you take steps against him. I am appealing to all women to have the courage and stand up for themselves,” said Dalimfazwe.
Ekurhuleni Social Club 2 was founded by local people under the leadership of John Masango, a local businessman.
The primary objective was to encourage its members to save money through weekly deposits which will be distributed to members at the end of the year.
The club currently boasts a membership of about 80 members having been established in April 2018.
Ekurhuleni Social Club 2 spokesperson David Ngcobo said they organised the event to honour their ladies and recognise their contributions and participation in building the club.
“In a way, this gesture would also be a token of our appreciation for the contributions made by women in this country towards the realisation of a just and egalitarian society based on human rights and democratic values. This is also our way of highlighting the plight of the women in our country who suffer from vestiges of a patriarchal history of our society manifesting itself in the unequal treatment of women,” said Ngcobo.
He added women are subjected to a myriad of gender-based criminal activity ranging from molestation, rape, femicide and everything in between.
“As a social club premised on family values and embracing equality among all members of society, we condemn all acts of violence against women and call upon our fellow brothers to desist from such activities and to respect our women,” explained Ngcobo.
“I have personally been inspired by some men in our society who have taken drastic steps to fight the scourge of gender-based violence in our society. In this regard, I would refer to men like Mbuyiselo Botha and the veteran actor Isaac Shayi. It is my wish that as we celebrate the centenary of, among others, Mama Albertina Sisulu, we should show our appreciation of her legacy by bringing an end to violence against women and children.”
