30 shacks gutted in fire in Boksburg informal settlement

The cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation.

About 30 shacks in Angelo Informal Settlement in Boksburg were gutted by fire on Wednesday morning.

Luckily no-one was injured.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, said firefighters from Boksburg’s Leon Ferreira Fire Station, backed up by Primrose and Boksburg Central fire stations, found multiple structures gutted. The strong wind blowing accelerated the spread of the fire in a short space of time.

“Prompt intervention prevented flames from spreading to the entire informal settlement and saved what could have been a catastrophic ordeal for the informal dwellers. Those affected tried desperately to salvage some of their belongings but unfortunately, little could be saved,” Ntladi said.

Water had to be shuttled to the scene. Disaster management officials arrived to assist those affected with relief aids.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation.
