Glen Marikana eviction order still not served, case postponed
'We are not going to move and we are not going to be evicted,'– says Mampuru Mampuru.
The application for the eviction of the Dann Road squatters has been postponed to November 19. This was heard in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Monday morning.
Part of the draft order issued by the court in May stated that the metro was supposed to draft a report, which include alternative accommodation, within 45 days of the draft order (May 21).
The metro’s report was late and not issued on time and as such the court wasn’t given enough time to go through the report. The applicant’s attorneys were also not afforded enough time to respond to the report.
Glen Marikana residents, supported by EFF members, were seen singing outside the court.
“We are not going to move and we are not going to be evicted. Our constitution is always on the side of the poor because we have been marginalised for long,” said Mampuru Mampuru, chairperson of the EFF Ekurhuleni region.
“We have identified Glen Marikana as a place we can call home and we are here to stay. Even the people who are in the process of having us evicted must find it upon themselves to see that they are harassing poor black people.
“The City of Ekurhuleni is bound to attend to this case. We will take it to council and raise it with the mayor that his own people are not honouring court processes because they had been given the paperwork but they were not coming through. We want fully-built houses with showers which must be built by the municipality.”
