Dogs at dog training club are ‘good citizens’

Any dog, purebred, crossbred or of mixed breeding, may take part provided it has had its required vaccinations.

Several dog handlers took part in the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (Kusa) Canine Good Citizen Test at Birch Acres Dog Training Club on May 1 and were awarded certificates.

The programme is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community and it encourages and stresses the importance of responsible dog ownership by the owners.

Any dog, purebred, crossbred or of mixed breeding, may take part provided it has had its required vaccinations.

The silver certificate winners were Rita Cook and Ditto, Morag Barkhuizen and Finn, Marna Welgemoed and Chloe, Rosalynne Baigrie and Astro, Annetjie Brancken and Waldi, Liesl Twyman, Venita Prigge and Marmite, and Alan Echakowitz and Sky. Absent: Sorira Walker and Lexie.

The Kusa Canine Good Citizen Test is a three-part programme comprising of a bronze, silver and gold level. These tests are not competitive and lay down the foundation for Kusa progression to disciplines, such as obedience, agility and dog jumping.

Successful participants receive a Kusa certificate and rosette.

“We urge owners to make the effort to train their dogs as they will experience the benefits of their dogs having good manners, responding well to household routines and they will be a joy to live with,” said Fiona Pittuck, a committee member of Birch Acres Dog Training Club.

These dog handlers and their dogs received bronze certificates: Jan Smit and Kazi, Hendrik Reyneke and Rosie, Liesl Twyman, Annetjie Bracken and Mega, Venita Prigge and Mooshoo, and Claire Patterson-Abrolat and Kilt.
