SheIsBrave mentors the youth at monthly sessions

SheIsBrave, a non-profit organisation, held its monthly meeting at Ivory Park Community North Hall on April 27.
SheIsBrave was founded by Amanda Nomnqa in 2018 and started with about 30 members. The organisation aims to empower and mentor young people through monthly empowerment events and sessions that are themed, outreach programmes at schools, motivational school drives and the targeting of young adults through the mentorship programmes they run in high schools.
They also aim to have brave, young, resilient individuals who are healed, empowered, driven and have what it takes to be world changers in every area of their lives.
Nomnqa said: “Growing up I never had a normal childhood and so many things happened. I always desired to have someone outside my home to talk to, to belong to and to open up to.
“I had to bounce back through everything I went through and that concerned me because what if some people are not strong enough to bounce back and carry on?” said Nomnqa.

“I always loved reaching out to people. The important question I like posing is ‘how are you?’ and someone will reply with ‘good’. I will then ask what is ‘good’ really and they will just break down,” explained Nomnqa.
“I decided to create the kind of platform I wanted and desired when I was young. With social media around in my community, people always wanted to know more on how to be resilient, how to belong and where you can learn and be empowered.
“On January 10, 2018, I formally founded the organisation, starting with 30 members and growing to 100 members in a space of a few months and we are still growing. We choose young girls specifically because they tend to fall victim to circumstances in so many ways. If they are taught and empowered, they cannot be taken advantage of so easily,” said Nomnqa.
Funeka Mpengesi, a member of the organisation, said they have already built a strong sisterhood that is unbreakable because of the rawness, vulnerability and transparency they have shared.
“Lessons shared among us healed the broken parts in our lives and instilled leadership and public speaking skills.
“This happened at one of our monthly empowerment private sessions. The session was intense but beautiful,” said Mpengesi.
