Foundation brings hope to Winnie Mandela learners

Bringing Hope Foundation, a non-profit foundation, visited Winnie Mandela Secondary School.

On May 9, Bringing Hope Foundation, a non-profit foundation, visited Winnie Mandela Secondary School in Winnie Mandela Zone Five to hold motivational sessions with the Grade 12 learners.

Bringing Hope Foundation aims to help schools learners with career advice and study tutorials and to promote reading. The foundation hopes to host events after every term and it will also be helping learners with studying and reading every two weeks.

It aims to target high school learners in Grade 12 and primary school learners from Grade Four to Grade Six.

Nhlamulo Hlayisi, founder of Bringing Hope Foundation, said their vision is to help learners to have passion in their studies, to make their best career choices and promote reading in the townships.

“We want them to read with understanding and confidence,” said Hlayisi.

Vice principal of Winnie Mandela Secondary School Mologadi Mabusela said a lot of the learners at the institution are orphans or do not have role models as they have to fill the big shoes of their parents.

“They need someone to motivate them. When you are motivated, you think positively, work harder, relax and do things in a focused manner,” said Mabusela.

“One aspect we can look into is helping learners choose subjects for the next year and which institution to enrol in, which course to choose and which career to take on.

“We are facing a high number of teenage pregnancies and quite a number of illegal substance users, including alcohol abuse,” said Mabusela.

“Parents and social development and child welfare, police and metro police are some of the parties that help us in these challenges. When the metro police find a learner in his or her uniform on the community streets, they take him or her to their house or the school premises.”

“We need to have strong family structures and that begins with having a mom and a dad. These learners are vulnerable.” said Mabusela.

“The feedback was amazing, it was positive and it was successful and the learners’ questions were relevant,” added Hlayisi.
