Back Yard Pop-Up shop to be hosted in Ecaleni Section

The pop-up store trend has taken off in South Africa with small businesses paying a small amount to book a stall.

Shoppers can expect an amazing variety of stalls to shop from at the Back Yard Pop-Up on June 8, including food, drinks, condiments, clothing, hair care products and accessories.

Not only that, but talented singer, Tay D Mahlangu, and renowned songstress Maleh, will serenade with their sultry voices,” said Tumelo ‘Melo’ Mthethwa, entrepreneur, musician and Van Riebeeck Park resident, who will host the first Backyard Pop-Up on June 8 at 15 Ecaleni Section, Thami Mnyele Drive East, Tembisa (opposite Isithebe creche) from 11am to 1pm.

A pop-up store or pop-up market is a trend of opening a temporary sales space. The pop-up store trend has taken off in South Africa with small businesses paying a small amount to book a stall to set up their mini-store to showcase their products at different pop-ups around the country.

This is fast becoming one of the biggest ways to build one’s brand as a business, and to penetrate the market. Explaining the name of the event, Mthethwa said the pop-up would be taking place in the backyard of her grandmother’s home.

“When you see the word backyard you automatically think of an intimate occasion, you think of laughter, good food and socialising. “That’s exactly what one can expect at this event – a beautiful day of mingling, shopping, eating and enjoying lovely live performances in my grandmother’s backyard,” she said with laughter.

She thanked her granny and uncle for allowing her to host this event, and hopes to have it on a monthly basis.

In partnership with the Mentor Empower and Love Others (MELO) Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Mthethwa, a winter drive will also be run on the same day.

“Entry into the event is free, but we ask that people donate warm clothes and blankets to help us spread the warmth this winter,” she added.
