Acting on information received from Ivory Park residents, the police on Tuesday last week recovered three illegal firearms, nine cellphones and a tablet.
Gauteng commissioner of police Lt Gen Elias Mawela has urged members of the public to sustain the vigour with which they have come forward to report crime as police continue to work hard to restore public confidence.
“If the arrests effected these past few months are anything to go by, it means we are well on our way to achieving our aim to enhance and strengthen community-police relations towards reduced volumes of serious and violent crime.
“Furthermore, the arrest of wanted suspects and repeat offenders, as well as the recovery of illegal firearms and ammunition, translates to many innocent lives being spared from murders, rapes and other violent attacks,” said Mawela.
Two suspects were arrested for possession of illegal firearms and possession of possibly stolen property.
“The suspects, as well as the firearms recovered, will be subjected to further investigations for possible linkage to previous serious and violent crimes, as police believe the duo could be responsible for some of the house robberies and rape incidents in the Ivory Park policing precinct,” added Mawela.
On the same day in Tembisa, members on patrol responded to a tip-off following a business robbery in April where four suspects allegedly attacked and tied up security guards and made off with cash and cellphones from a shop.
Two men, aged 35 and 43, were arrested at a house in Entshonalanga Section, where police found an illegal 9mm pistol, a magazine and ammunition. Police also found six cellphones believed to be part of the loot stolen from the shop.
Meanwhile, four other suspects were successfully tracked and arrested during an operation in Tembisa South, while one illegal liquor trading outlet was shut down.
Of the four suspects, a 37-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle reported at Wierdabrug in April, and contravention of parole conditions.
The other three were wanted for various crimes such as assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common robbery.
Crime can be reported, anonymously if need be, by visiting a nearby police station or calling the crime stop number on 08600 10111.
