Man arrested in Ecaleni for discharging firearm in public

The suspect was detained at the Tembisa police cells

On June 2 at about 7.30am, members of the Tembisa police were on patrol next to the Engine garage in Ecaleni Section in Tembisa. They suddenly heard gunshots and reacted immediately. Community members pointed at the suspect who was still holding a firearm in his hands, arguing with another suspect.

Capt Manyadza Ralidzhivha, Rabasotho SAPS communications officer, said the suspect was disarmed and on checking the firearm, a 9mm Girsan pistol with seven live rounds of ammunition, it was discovered the serial number was filed off.

“The 25-year-old suspect could not give a reason for the possession of the firearm and ammunition. He was placed under arrest for the possession of the firearm and ammunition without licence, as well as discharging of a firearm in a municipal area,” said Ralidzhivha.

“The suspect had discharged a firearm and a cartridge was retrieved from the scene. The suspect was detained at the Tembisa police cells,” added Ralidzhivha.

He will appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon to answer charges of discharging a firearm in a municipality area, possession of firearm and live ammunition without a licence.
