Bophelong’s elderly attracts international audience from BBC World Service

Tembisa gogos impresses international news network.

Bophelong Fitness Club caught the attention of the BBC World Service when the elderly people performed Aerobic Dance Steps for international journalists.

Instructor and founder of Bophelong Fitness Club Cathrine Mathebe (62) said, on May 30, the journalists visited the club to take videos and put the story on a world stage.

“They found us through our media interviews and they were impressed.

“From overseas they came to capture this moment.

“The elderly are representing Tembisa abroad and I want to invite more elderly people to come and join us,” said Mathebe.

She said there is no fee charged for the sessions and she guaranteed that the gym can change the lives of many elderly people.

Bophelong Fitness Club members sweat at the aerobics gym.

Mathebe said the elderly can fight ailments through training and added that Bophelong Fitness Club’s aerobics are paid from her own pocket.

“It will please me to see local people supporting this initiative.

“Here we are showing the international community that we can initiate something unique,” she said.

She also appealed to potential sponsors to come and see what the elderly people are doing for themselves.

Mathebe asked local councillors to get on board in insuring Bophelong Fitness Club grows to cater for all elderly people in Tembisa.

“I want to thank The Tembisan for exposing us since 2017.

“I applaud the newspaper for the sterling work they are doing,” said Mathebe.
