Cellphone company competition is a scam
Station commander of Ivory Park SAPS Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo appeals to the public to not fall for these tricksters.

An Ivory Park woman suffered financial loss after she responded to a scam from somebody purporting to be working for a cellphone company.
The scammer called the victim on her cellphone, informing her that she had won a cellphone in a competition run by the company simply because she had been a loyal customer for a long time.
Capt Bernard Matimulane, Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, the scammer “sweetened” the deal with a R10 airtime voucher, which the victim then fell for.
“She was advised to punch in certain numbers, follow the voice prompts, which she did, and immediately afterwards the phone stopped working. It was then that money was withdrawn out of her bank account. She lost R3 000 to the scammer,” said Matimulane.

“The simple fact that one had not entered any competition should be reason enough not to entertain these scammers,” said Ngcobo.
“You cannot win a competition you never entered. That should be the first question people should ask themselves when they are approached by callers such as the one in this matter,” added Ngcobo.
