Ivory Park rape and murder suspect identified after nine years

The suspect behind bars was found through DNA from other rape and murder cases.

Ivory Park detectives have made a breakthrough in a case of the rape and murder of a local woman in 2010, and the rape of another in 2011.

After receiving DNA results from the police’s Forensic Science Laboratory and conducting further background searches, the police discovered the person they are looking for was already behind bars in Modderbee Prison for another rape.

Ivory Park SAPS communications officer Capt Bernard Matimulane said it is due to the hard work and unwavering tenacity of Det Const Edmond Lebopo that the 31-year-old suspect was eventually identified.

“He has since been charged and has, on Friday, appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court. The matter has been postponed to July 5 for further investigation. The suspect has been in custody and on trial for another rape which took place in January,” said Matimulane.

“In the 2010 case the victim was raped and stabbed with a sharp object to the neck. She died immediately. In the second case the victim was raped near Motsu Section in 2011.

“The long arm of the law has a way of catching up with criminals when they least expect it. We remain unwavering in our quest to ensure victims receive the justice they deserve,” said Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS.
