Children’s home staff passes on knowledge about Youth Day

Ikhaya Lothando Children's Home care centre staff members held an afternoon DVD session with the centre's children to educate them about the importance of Youth Day.

On June 12, Ikhaya Lothando Children’s Home care centre staff members held an afternoon DVD session with the centre’s children to educate them about the importance of Youth Day.

According to the centre manager and social worker, Penelope Letsoalo, the session was all about educating the young ones about their history.

“We deal with teenage boys. We wanted to deepen their knowledge as to how we came to celebrate the day in South Africa and not rely only on the information they receive at school because some of them are taking history as a subject,” said Letsoalo.

“On June 16 they will be join the Church of New Day to celebrate the special day.”

Letsoalo also said the boys play soccer as an extra-mural activities with local sport fanatics and they also sing in a choir.

“We have Bible studies with one of the local pastors to educate the children on the history of the bible, which adds to the business of history,” said Letsoalo.

“We are happy to change their lives and we do anything to try and change their lives in the best way possible, as they say, we are the agents of change,” added Letsoalo.

Nomthandazo Mabona, centre care worker, said they want to groom them and teach them how to be strong on their own.

“We wanted to show them they are special as well. We watched a Special Assignment documentary about the responsibilities of children’s homes and how children in homes should behave. We also watched Sarafina and had a question and answer session,” said Mabona.

Nomthandazo Mabona, centre care worker, emphasises the importance of history being thought to the young people of South Africa.
