WATCH: Recycling site in Pomona goes up in flames

The recycling site is in close proximity to rental rooms and a guesthouse.

A recycling site in close proximity to rental rooms and a guesthouse went up in flames in Pomona on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire at the recycling site situated on Pomona Road is alleged to have started around 5pm.

“We are not sure whether the recycling site is legal or not but it appears that paper and plastic are being recycled,” said Maswati Mdluli, Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson.

“It is unclear what started the fire but witnesses allege it started in one corner and rapidly spread across the site.”

Residents from the rental rooms were seen standing, hoping the fire would not spread to their properties as there is no wall or gate separating the recycling site and the rooms.

According to Mdluli, no injuries were reported and the owner of the recycling site is unknown.

Mdluli told Express Kempton Park Fire Station received back-up from Tembisa, Rynfield, Farrarmere and Leon Ferreira fire stations.

“Six fire engines and two water tankers attended to the fire which took about three hours to extinguish,” said Mdluli.

“Around 8.30pm the teams were still on site dampening to ensure it was completely extinguished. Investigations will establish the cause of the fire.

“The fire spread very fast and it could be due to the dry material and possibly some of the containers having chemicals which contributed to the rapid spread.”

It took about three hours to extinguish the fire and a couple more to dampen down and ensure the fire was completely out.
