Celebrating Youth Day by cleaning up the township

Members of Born Free Take Over pave the way for the youth.

On June 17, an organisation called Born Free Take Over embarked on a campaign to clean their township in Mnonjaneni Section.

Born Free Take Over member Kamokgelo Masemola said to commemorate the youth that fought in June 16 they decided to observe the Youth Month through cleaning their township.

“Instead of going to taverns and have fun, we decided to raise awareness on maintaining a clean environment.

“This is our first campaign and going forward we will continue to hold such campaigns.

“We hope more youth will join the movement in empowering young people in the whole of Tembisa,” said Masemola.

He said after the cleaning they are planning to engage the community and appeal to them that they should take part in maintaining cleanliness in the environment.

Masemola said property owners who rent rooms to tenants must make sure they have bigger rubbish bins to accommodate waste coming from their tenants.

He said they will encourage landlords and landladies to use big wheelie bins to avoid illegal dumping in the area.

Born Free Take Over also aims to give skills to young people around Tembisa.

“We are the future and we need to take charge of our fate and fight to acquire the things that the youth need.

“We will focus on arts and culture, even if we do not have funding at the moment. We will continue to work for our community,” Masemola said.

He said there is enormous talent in Tembisa and honing it can prevent young people from frustration that leads to crime or substance abuse.

Masemola said the youth of 1976 fought their own struggle and youth today needs to take the baton and continue to battle struggles like the rising unemployment of young people.
