City council to repair ‘bridge of death’ near Birch Acres Mall

There are plans to improve it further, including the area in its proximity for ease of mobility by road users

The City of Ekurhuleni has promised to fix the bridge on the corner of Zuurfontein Road and Nyathi Street, opposite Birch Acres Mall in Ward 13.

This bridge has came to be known as the ‘bridge of death’ due to its appalling state, which poses a real threat to the lives of the residents in the community.

“The bridge forms part of the Bus Rapid Transport infrastructure, but before it was incorporated into the BRT programme, it was an old pavement structure,” explained the city council spokesman, Themba Gadebe.

“There are plans to improve it further, including the area in its proximity for ease of mobility by road users. Designs have been drawn up and approved and a process is underway to appoint contractors,” Gadebe continued.

Bringing the plight of the community into the open was the Democratic Alliance’s PR Clr Kade Guerreiro, who argued that concerns regarding this bridge had been reported on numerous occasions, yet, to date, nothing had been done about the huge safety risk.

“I am calling on the MMC of infrastructure to treat the residents of the City of Ekurhuleni with dignity and stop making excuses for the lack of delivery.

“The community of Tembisa deserves a caring government that puts the people first,” said Guerreiro.

Members of the community alleged that a number of vehicles have crashed there because of the condition of the road, while numerous vehicles have also driven off the bridge because of the lack of signage.

“Contractors will be on site in July,” promised Gadebe.
