Missing plans lead to water outage in Rhodesfield

Residents said they managed to collect water at night when a low pressure supply was provided at 3am.

A water outage that had Rhodesfield residents enraged persisted for three weeks since June 10.Although a big portion of residents have had their water restored by June 25, not everyone was this fortunate as a small number still had no water by that time. Some residents claimed they managed to collect water at night when a low pressure supply was provided at 3am.

According to acting ward councillor Tracey Lourenco, there were still residents who did not have water last week.

The outage was caused by contractors who hit two deep undergrounds pipes on a construction site close to OR Tambo International Airport.

“It seems like it truly was an accident, since the underwater pipeline diagram didn’t reflect those pipes, as the original diagram got lost.”

Ward councillor Simon Lapping said the original blueprint of the underground pipe structure had been lost in a warehouse fire.

Lourenco stated before the contractors became aware of the damaged pipes, they had filled the cavity with cement. This exacerbated the problem.

She commended the work by the contractors, saying “the contractors are good and have been working around the clock to address the issue.”

Wynand Pakker, a Rhodesfield resident said everyone went crazy about the power outage in Glen Marais two weeks ago. However, water is a living necessity – you can live without electricity but not without water.

He said it did not seem like there was any sense of urgency and being without water for weeks on end was an outrage.

Lapping told Kempton Express on Monday, according to his knowledge, water had been restored to all residences.

The metro was contacted with regards to the water outage but had not responded by the time of publishing.
