Theft on Eskom line leaves industrial customers in metro without power

Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activities

The Eskom Claystep Consol 88kv line in Ekurhuleni has collapsed due to theft of branches on the double circuit structure, leaving industrial and some residential customers without electricity supply.

“We are concerned about theft and vandalism, as this does not only compromise the integrity of the network, but causes prolonged power supply interruptions affecting customers, and further posing a serious safety risk to the public”, said Motlhabane Ramashi of the operations and maintenance unit in Gauteng.

Eskom constantly inspects, monitors and fixes any defects, however, vandalism has been the main cause that has caused the collapse of the structures.

Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activities, theft or vandalism of electrical infrastructure at the local police station or Eskom contact centre on 086 003 7566.
