Alert traffic wardens spot alleged drug deal going down in CBD

The suspected drug dealer was handcuffed and detained at Kempton Park Police Station.

The quick reaction of two alert traffic wardens led to the arrest of a suspected drug dealer on Wednesday morning.

Khat worth R50 000, still in rock form, was found in the Nigerian national’s (30) possession.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), said the two wardens from the Kempton Park precinct were on routine patrol around 7.30am, driving down Maxwell Street in the central business district.

“Their suspicions were raised when a man travelling in a vehicle stopped and handed over something to a person. At his second stop the wardens confronted him. On searching the man, the drugs were uncovered,” said Kagasago.

The suspected drug dealer was handcuffed and detained at Kempton Park Police Station.

Ward councillor Jaco Terblanche congratulated the wardens with the arrest.

“I hope that the justice system do not fail the residents of Kempton Park by granting the offender bail. It is important that we keep them in jail until the trial has been been finalised.

“I urge the community to report possible drug hot spots to the metro police and police. We as community need to take hands with the law enforcement authorities and work together as one South Africa for a safe Kempton Park. Residents are also welcome to send the information to myself via WhatsApp/sms to 083 413 2420. I will ensure it reaches the correct officers,” Terblanche said.
