Over 200 attend YES hub Youth Day celebrations

In commemoration of Youth Month, the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs, a business unit at the Department of Economic Development, in partnership with Kago Youth Employment Services (YES) Hub Tembisa, held a Youth Empowerment Workshop at the Moses Molelekwa Art Centre on June 25.

The event was attended by over 200 young people who were exposed to economic opportunities provided by the department and other stakeholders.

The Department of Economic Development explained what the requirements for accessing business support opportunities for the youth. Furthermore, the youth were provided with free credit reports from several credit bureaus and were taught the importance of using credit responsibly.

Milly Viljoen, director for consumer education, awareness and stakeholder relations at the Department of Economic Development, said they felt it is important to initiate this session and to invite all other stakeholders to empower the youth in Tembisa.

“The mandate of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development is to facilitate, promote and develop economic growth in the Gauteng City Region,” said Viljoen.

Other stakeholders present included the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs, which highlighted consumer rights and responsibilities; the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) which touched on business enterprise support information; the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB), which promoted responsible alcohol consumption and ethical and legal alcohol trading; the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB), which focused on prevention of problem gambling and promotes responsible gambling practices; the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and Credit Ombud, which gave advice on credit matters.

Thabo Mashela, Kago YES Hub Tembisa manager, said they are proud to be part of this initiative.

“We believe that through such interventions we will make a meaningful difference in the lives of youth in Tembisa,” said Mashela.
