Pensioners treated to a breakfast feast at Thembi Shopping Centre
'This was our first time doing this and we would love to continue looking after our senior citizens'
About 150 pensioners were treated to a hot breakfast feast while waiting for their pension grant pay-outs on Tuesday morning at Thembi Shopping Centre.
Old time friends Mmoledi Motaung and Mongezi Masombuka felt the need to treat the senior citizens after seeing them subjected to long queues and in the cold when waiting for their pay-outs.
“We were touched and moved after seeing our elders queuing for hours in the cold when they come here to collect their pension grants. We decided on the spot that there must be something we can do for them. And the idea of preparing hot soup and bread for them while waiting to be serviced was conceived,” explained Motaung.
She continued, “Remember, some of these oldies are suffering from high blood sugar level and are taking strong medication, which can be dangerous if taken on an empty stomach. So, this exercise had different benefits for our grand-parents.”

The two friends used their own money and time to help feed the pensioners, who were equally happy and appreciative of the gesture.
“These are our grandparents and we just wanted to do something nice for them, just to show our appreciation for having raised us so well. They may not be our biological relatives but they come from a community that we grew up in. And so preparing and doing this for them was so rewarding,” said Motaung.
She said they would love to do this often, but only if budget permits.
“This was our first time doing this and we would love to continue looking after our senior citizens, not just during the winter season but all year long,” hinted Motaung.
One of the many recipients, Gogo Martha Malapeng, couldn’t hide her joy and said she didn’t expect this especially from such young lasses.
“I am really touched by their gesture. This was an unexpected surprise. These ladies really made our day,” said the jubilant granny.
