After more than a year, a Spartan businessman still sits with a damaged entrance in front of his business.Hennie Dalton, whose business is located on Rigger Road, had been battling with the City of Ekurhuleni since April 2018, requesting feedback and assistance.
Contractors Matiyane resurfaced Rigger Road and left the paving and driveways in front of businesses in a shambles.
Dalton said the contractors had to dig up curb stones and driveways for the purpose of retarring the surface area alongside it. However, the contractors disappeared once the tarring had been completed.
“Driveways, curb stones and drains were unnecessarily destroyed by the contractors and we have not seen them here for a while now.”

On site, one can see how the sidewalks and driveways to multiple businesses in the street are bulking up and are broken down. This makes it a challenge for any car to enter these business properties without nearly damaging one’s tyres.
According to both ward councillor Simon Lapping and Dalton, the contractors originally commissioned to do the job hired sub-contractors to complete the repairs to curb stones and driveways. These sub-contractors had allegedly fled with the money before finishing the remaining repairs.

Following these events, Dalton was contacted by an unrelated contractor who said he would be able to complete the necessary remaining repairs. However, this contractor told Dalton that before he would be able to do the work, he would need a deposit, since he had no funds to begin repairs.
Dalton refrained from accepting this offer, as the surrounding businesses could not take the risk of paying this deposit on their own dime, as the risk of contractors fleeing with the money was so high.
The metro failed to reply to Kempton Express’ queries.
