Kempton’s child author (11) invited to speak in London

One of her achievements was being able to donate 1 000 copies of her book to Thabaneng Primary School in Orlando West

Sixth Grade child author Buhle Mthethwa’s (11) innocent passion resonated in her handwriting as she autographed a copy of her self-published book, The Big Fat Naughty Cat, for Kempton Express.

She truly is an inspiration as she had written her very own children’s story book in 2017 when she was only nine.

Buhle was invited to address 350 people at an event in London on June 20.

Her mother Nthabiseng told Express: “Buhle spoke at the Mellon Educate UK Gala Dinner where she address those who are raising funds to be submitted in November to be used to build high-tech libraries and more schools in South Africa.”

Adding to Buhle’s incredible personal achievements and passion for reading and writing, she has been appointed as Mellon Educate’s literacy programme ambassador. The literacy programme will be launched at two schools in August. Learners in these schools will be transported to partnering corporate locations.

“Her main responsibility will be to show how to start peer-to-peer reading groups at schools and in the wider community,” said Nthabiseng.

Mellon Educate ascribed her to inspire and rejuvenate the way children learn to read and write creatively, and to support their continued enjoyment of the written word.

This all started when Buhle was only eight years old and noticed that some of her peers in class were struggling to read and write.

“I was actually confused at this fact, since I could do it. So I decided to go to the library and took some books to stay after school,” she told Express.

She told her dad at the time to pick her up from school later in the afternoons so she could help her friends to learn how to read and write.

“That’s when I realised how much I love to read, which I did incessantly until I was in the Grade Four, and then I asked myself why couldn’t I write a book?”

That was when she wrote The Big Fat Naughty Cat. Buhle is currently writing her second story, which she hopes will be become The Big Fat Naughty Cat 2. Before she publishes the second book, Buhle and her mom hope to gain more exposure.

One of her achievements was being able to donate 1 000 copies of her book to Thabaneng Primary School in Orlando West, Soweto, in 2018. Her charitable contributions have an array of stories to tell.
