The Boikanyo Bug is a 1972 VW Beetle that will travel from the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital to Transylvania, Romania, in aid of underprivileged children who need heart surgery.
The drivers, Alex Staniland and Leigh Michael, have been preparing for the 14 500km journey and will depart on Nelson Mandela Day.
“We will travel through 12 countries and three continents. The Beetle will go on a boat across the Mediterranean Sea and we will take a flight and meet it in Turkey and drive over to Romania,” said Staniland.
“The main aim is to raise money, but we also hope to spread and replicate the Boikanyo Foundation throughout the African countries. The foundation is for South African children but the plan is to make it for African children.”
Ian Vogt, chairperson of The Round Table Golden East 181, told Express that Staniland and Michael were expected to arrive in Romania on August 24.
“The reason to drive to Romania is that Round Table International will be meeting there where over a thousand Round Tablers from all over the world will be gathered,” said Vogt.
“The plan is to tell them about the foundation and convince them to donate towards the initiative.”
After the trip, the Boikanyo Bug will be raffled to help raise funds on the website www.theboikanyobug.co.za
