Spokesperson of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Eric Maloka said there were no fatalities reported on the day, but three people sustained minor injuries due to jumping off a moving train.
“We received a call about a Metrorail train departing from Leralla station being on fire. Our first station to respond was Commercia Fire Station. When they arrived at 5.05pm, they reported that the train was indeed on fire.

“They were told the train’s burning carriage had to be isolated, but the main challenge was that there were no technicians on site to disconnect electrical connections,” said Maloka.
He said the three injured passengers had to be transported to Tembisa Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and investigations on the cause of the fire had been started.
Maloka said the fire was contained with no fatalities.
