Secondary school learners learn about entrepreneurship

Tembisa learners get entrepreneurship skills.

On July 26, Boitumelong Secondary School learners completed a finance management and entrepreneurship skills programme organised by Momentum Metropolitan Holdings.

An educator at the school, Ntombi Maphanga, said they were excited about the Metropolitan Kick-start programme because it taught children how to handle debt and start their own business.

“This will deal with the problem of financial mismanagement faced by young people whenever they start to work after completing school.

“This will help them to look at budgeting from a different view.

“The programme increases the level of understanding in subjects like accounting and business studies,” said Maphanga.

Maphanga added that the programme boosted confidence in learners who chose commercial subjects because many learners prioritise subjects in sciences.

She said the company also assists the school with money to renovate the school.

Maphanga said participating groups were tasked with a project of designing their own sneakers.

The winning group, called Revamp, was excited that their design stood out and selected as the judges’ choice.

One of the group’s members, Rethabile Kotsokoane, said they had challenges working in a group as first-timers in designing.

“We have never designed and personally, I always wanted to design my own thing.

“At first we were not listening to one another, we got more confused,” said Kotsokoane.

She said working in a group taught them team work in a creative space.

Boitumelong Secondary principal Sesi Makena said the programme gave her learners an opportunity to design and draw up their business plans.

“The partnership with Momentum Metropolitan Holdings will last for four years.

“What I like about the programme is the excitement it gives to our learners, while on the other hand they are learning valuable skills,” Makena said.
