City manager launches Women’s Month in style in Tembisa

'For me, this is a special day because we start early in the morning by joining our female traffic officers'

The City of Ekurhuleni kick-started Women’s Month in great style by saluting its female employees serving in the police and Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

Championed by the city’s first female manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, the day started with an all-female officers’ roadblock and a donation of mattresses, first-aid kits, fire extinguishers and food parcels to Siyazigabisa Children’s Centre.

Mashazi said this month offers the City opportunity to reflect on the triumphs and contributions achieved by, and challenges still faced by, the City’s female employees and women in general.

“This month affords us opportunity to honour all our female employees who tirelessly dedicate their time and energy in making sure we create a safer and working municipality for all our communities. We are aware of the challenges we are still confronted with, but also proud of the victories we have recorded in shaping and changing the lives of women,” said Mashazi.

She said the City started this programme in 2017.

“For me, this is a special day because we start early in the morning by joining our female traffic officers in conducting roadblocks where we check vehicles’ roadworthiness. Just this morning alone we have impounded six unroadworthy vehicles, issued more than 500 fines for traffic violations, distributed over 1 000 educational material on road safety and donated fire extinguishers, especially to taxi operators,” she continued.
