RAND WATER UPDATE: Water is being used too fast

Residents can expect low water pressure from around 3pm this afternoon until tonight where we estimate that water will be fully restored

Update 16.20pm:

Eddie Singo, executive manager operations at Rand Water, confirmed residents could expect to see an increase in the water pressure on Tuesday night.

“All our reservoirs are receiving water. The only challenge is that as the water goes into the reservoirs it is being used immediately,” said Singo.

“Due to that fact, it takes times for the water capacity to build up. The best time for the capacity to build up is at night as there is less consumption.”

Singo agreed with Terblanche that the system was empty. “We extend our apologies to residents as it was a difficult weekend, but we have repaired and all that is left is for the reservoirs to build up enough water,” said Singo.

Parts of Kempton Park are still without water or experiencing very low water pressure on Tuesday afternoon, although Rand Water had been pumping full-steam since Monday afternoon.

Although some areas have water there are residents who told Express that water returned to their pipes on Monday night only to ‘disappear’ again on Tuesday morning.

According to ward councillor Jaco Terblanche the problem is that the network hasn’t stabilised yet.

“The situation right now is that the reservoir is being filled as it was completely empty,” said Terblanche.

“Residents can expect low water pressure between 3pm and 4pm this afternoon until later tonight when we estimate water will be fully restored.”

Terblanche said areas still affected include Rhodesfield, Kempton Park extentions, Kempton Park Extentions Two and Four, Aston Manor, Nimrod Park and parts of Glen Marais.

“According to the water department, North Road and Woodbridge Square are at the highest points which is why they experienced a drop in the water pressure to no water this morning,” said Terblanche.

“I urge all residents to use water sparingly during this time, even when your water is fully restored. As tough as it is, I plead with the community to be a bit more patient.”

Express was unable to get hold of Rand Water for comment.
