Mayor, senior officials to take 33% salary cut as well

Discussions are under way with heads of departments to donate 25 per cent over the three months

The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni will donate 33 per cent of his monthly salary to the country’s Solidarity Fund over the next three months.

Clr Mzwandile Masina made the announcement on Thursday night.

According to the mayor’s office, other senior officials of the City of Ekurhuleni will also contribute a percentage of their salaries to the fund the next three months.

The city manager and group chief financial officer will both donate 33 per cent, members of the mayoral committee 25 per cent, the speaker of council 20 per cent and the chief whip of council 15 per cent.

Discussions are under way with heads of departments to donate 25 per cent over the three months, divisional heads 12,5 per cent and officials five per cent. The outcomes of these discussions will be communicated as they are concluded, said Masina.

This discussion comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the 14-day extension of the nationwide lockdown and the decision by himself, his cabinet and all provincial premiers to donate 33 per cent of their salaries to the country’s Solidarity Fund.

“We must all heed the call made by President Ramaphosa for us to rise to the occasion and live up to his national Thuma Mina moment. Every effort and gesture we can make as citizens will go far in assisting efforts to flatten the curve.

“We welcome the 14-day nationwide lockdown extension. Indeed now is not the time to relax, our struggle against the invisible enemy must be intensified. The City of Ekurhuleni will continue to work in collaboration with both provincial and national spheres of government in combating the Covid-19 global pandemic,” said Masina.
