Two police officers nailed after Woodbridge Square robbery

They robbed a woman of nearly R40 000 before dropping her off at Kempton Park Police Station

Two police officers were arrested by Benoni Flying Squad on April 16 following a robbery at Woodbridge Square on Monument Road.

Two firearms as well as nearly R40 000 were recovered, said W/O Grant Giblin, spokesperson for Benoni Flying Squad.

The suspects, aged 39 and 42, will face charges of possession of suspected stolen goods in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court. Charges may be added as investigations continue, said Giblin.

According to Giblin, the incident started around 10.45am when members received a lookout for a gold double-cab Toyota Hilux bakkie. It was reported that the vehicle had two suspects who allegedly approached a woman at Woodbridge Square after she had withdrawn money from a bank.

“They robbed her and fled after dropping her at Kempton Park Police Station,” added Giblin.

Three flying squad members who were patrolling on Modderfontein Road near Thembisa immediately began to search for the vehicle. They spotted a vehicle matching the description, driving from Kempton Park on Modderfontein Road.

Giblin said the double cab was pulled over next to Mayibuye Section in Rabie Ridge, where both suspects got out with their hands up and identified themselves as South African Police officers.

“The suspects were immediately disarmed from a 9mm pistol and an air gun. Upon searching the vehicle, on the passenger floor, a sports bag was found with R39 900. There was no explanation of where the cash came from.

“They were further found in possession of their appointment certificates and identified as working at Lyttleton SAPS detectives and Rabie Ridge detectives respectively. Both suspects were arrested and detained at Rabie Ridge SAPS,” said Giblin.

Investigations are continuing.
