An Ivory Park man has been arrested in connection with a murder in January 2018 after being on the run for 14 months.
Ivory Park detectives assigned to the case, through their networks, got wind of the fact that the 31-year-old suspect was back in the area, 14 months after he escaped. He was arrested near his home on May 20.
Capt Bernard Matimulane, Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, said the suspect was alleged to have been involved in a lovers quarrel with another man over the affections of the same lady.
“It is alleged that on that day the lady’s other boyfriend came to the suspect’s address looking for her. A squabble ensued between the two men as the other man wanted to leave with the lady and the suspect was having none of that.
“During the argument the suspect is alleged to have taken out a knife and stabbed the deceased on the upper body. The victim was certified dead on the scene,” Matimulane said.
The suspect fled the scene shortly after the incident and went to KwaZulu-Natal.
Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, the station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, has welcomed the arrest, noting that the law is capable of catching up with anyone, however long it takes.
“We hope that this arrest is a first step in assisting the deceased’s family in getting much-needed closure, and the much-deserved answers surrounding their loved one’s death,” said Ngcobo.
