Ekurhuleni Department of Roads and Stormwater cleaned stormwater drains at Isimuku Street next to Birch Acres Mall on September 8.
This formed part of an initiative to support economic development.
The department’s chief engineer in Thembisa, Kgadi Marumo, said stormwater drainage plays an essential role in getting rid of the water before it accumulates on roads, causing flooding.

“The initiative aims to ensure the safety of Birch Acres Mall and shoppers by preventing flooding during the rainy season.
“Isimuku Street is where one of the busiest shopping malls in Thembisa is located and where huge economic activities happen. Our intervention is to support and ensure the economy is not interrupted by flooding or damage to infrastructure,” Marumo said.
“The city calls on street vendors and shoppers to refrain from dumping waste inside the stormwater drains as this is the challenge faced around the places of trade.”
Residents and businesses are encouraged to report all stormwater-related matters to the My CoE app or call centre on 0860 543 000 or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za
