Gauteng police are on a manhunt for a group of suspects following a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred on Plane Road on Saturday morning.
“At around 09:00, a fidelity cash van was driving in Kempton Park when a white Mercedes-Benz, with a false registration number, rammed into it. The cash van overturned and a shoot-out ensued.
“The suspects bombed the cash van and it is unknown at this stage if any money was taken,” said Col Athlenda Mathe, the SAPS national spokesperson, on Saturday.
“The suspects fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger and a white Toyota Quantum. The suspects were chased by the police and a local security company.
“The suspects, in the Ford Ranger, lost control and collided with a traffic light. These suspects then hijacked a white Isuzu bakkie and that bakkie was also cornered.
“Two suspects have been arrested and their accomplices fled the scene.”
Although the heist occurred on Plane Road, just metres away from the Kempton Park Football Club, there were multiple crimes scenes.
Mathe also confirmed that one of the suspects arrested was shot. The occupants of the cash van were also injured during the heist.
“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the security van on fire and the two male security guards on the side of the road,” said Ross Campbell, ER24’s multimedia producer.
“The fire department arrived to put out the fire, while our paramedics along with an advanced life support (ALS) medic from another service treated the injured. The more seriously injured patient, a 49-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and required ALS interventions to stabilise his condition.
“The second patient, a 43-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. Both were treated and transported to a hospital for further care.”
Mathe confirmed that the driver of the cash van sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital for further medical care while the crew was taken to a hospital by an ambulance.
“Police recovered four rifles and three vehicles, including a white Mercedes-Benz, white Ford Ranger and white Toyota Quantum,” added Mathe.
