Pridwin Prep learners visit Melville Koppies

Despite the many pairs of short legs, their enthusiasm sped them up and down the Koppies on the 3km route with no complaints.

Pridwin Prep School Grade Ones recently visited the Melville Koppies and, according to one boy, he saw “the whole world”.

The Koppies’ volunteer guides opened the youngsters’ eyes to the remains of stone walls more than 200 years old, a very old scraper from hunter-gatherer times, and a restored furnace. They even got down on their knees to try sorghum grinding.

A day’s outing offers evidence of hunter-gatherers, the first farmers, who were also iron-makers and how the Melville Koppies almost became a gold mine.

There are also the three billion-year-old rocks that tell a story of volcanoes, an inland sea and a giant meteorite, natural, indigenous grassland and a forest where learners can see what they’ve learnt in the classroom.
