Festive season operations clamp down on crime

Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole expressed gratitude to all law enforcement officers who participated in the operations.

Before the end of 2024, the SAPS worked diligently to ensure that crime did not disrupt the festive season.

On December 12, 336 suspects were arrested for various offences by law enforcement members and other stakeholders during festive season operations conducted across Ekurhuleni policing precincts.

Additionally, 15 illegal shebeens were shut down.

Among those apprehended, 169 suspects were arrested by detectives during suspect-raiding operations.

These arrests included 113 for contact crimes, 36 for other serious crimes, 24 for gender-based violence, and seven for property crimes.

A further 167 suspects were arrested during weekend operations conducted by SAPS members and other law enforcement agencies across Ekurhuleni precincts.

One of the primary operations took place in the Ivory Park area, led by provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 21 illegal immigrants, the recovery of a stolen motor vehicle taken in Roodepoort, and several other arrests: seven for possession of drugs, one for possession of dagga, five for selling liquor without a licence, 13 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 14 for public drinking, and six for public intoxication.

In another incident, members of the Ekurhuleni Trio Task Team were patrolling along Hospital Road in Brakpan at approximately 12:40 when they received information about a blue-and-purple Toyota Quantum towing a trailer with suspected stolen tyres.

On investigation, the vehicle was located with three suspects inside.

When questioned, the suspects claimed to have purchased the tyres in Mpumalanga but failed to provide an invoice.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the tyres were stolen during a business robbery in Middelburg.

The three suspects were arrested and detained in Brakpan.
