POLICE UNIFORM among items found during late night raid

EMPD are dealing with numerous cases of criminals impersonating police officers to exploit the vulnerable and carry out criminal activities.

An intelligence-driven operation by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s Tracing Unit, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) and Blue Hawk Tactical, led to the arrest of a 43-year-old man in Thembisa late last night, April 14.

According to EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato, the operation followed up on information about a possible stolen vehicle and firearms at a residence on Bazarhuti Street.

Officers recovered a Mazda CX-5 with false registration plates.

Further checks confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen under a Daveyton case number.

During the operation, the suspect was found in possession of a Star 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, 26 live rounds of ammunition, and parts of an Ekurhuleni Metro Police uniform.

Makgato noted that investigators are looking into how the suspect came into possession of the EMPD uniform.

“We’ve been dealing with numerous cases of individuals impersonating police officers to exploit the vulnerable and carry out criminal activities,” she said.

The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in any other crimes.

The suspect is expected to face charges including:

  • Possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,

  • Possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and

  • Impersonating a police officer.

He is set to appear in court soon.

Makgato emphasised the importance of public vigilance and continued investigative efforts to preserve community safety and trust in law enforcement.
