Man sentenced to life for 2017 Thembisa kidnapping and rape

On the night of November 26, 2017 the victim was walking home when she was approached by the suspect who robbed and raped her.

A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and rape of an 18-year-old woman in Thembisa nearly eight years ago.

On the night of November 26, 2017 the victim was walking home from a local buy-and-braai spot in the Mkhathini Section when she was approached by a man armed with a firearm.

The suspect forced her into a nearby park, robbed her of her cellphone, and raped her.

The matter was reported to the Tembisa SAPS and assigned to Detective Warrant Officer William Seshikane Maela from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“Warrant Officer Maela left no stone unturned to ensure the suspect was found and detained,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson, Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

On May 8 this year Mzimkhulu Rowan Mofolo (35) was found guilty by the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court and sentenced to life behind bars.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, applauded Warrant Officer Maela for his dedication in securing the conviction.

“This conviction sends a strong message to criminals who continue to violate and terrorise victims in our district,” said Sithole.
