Truck hijacking and kidnapping ring foiled, five suspects arrested

While on patrol officers who had been alerted to an earlier kidnapping spotted a vehicle dropping the victim off in Kempton Park.

The EMPD’s Northern Region Task Team, together with Kempton Park Precinct officers and Gauteng Traffic Wardens, arrested five suspects on August 27, for their alleged involvement in a hijacking, kidnapping, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, officers acted on information received about a victim who had been hijacked and kidnapped by five men driving a white Toyota Corolla Quest.

“While patrolling the area, officers spotted the vehicle dropping off the victim in Kempton Park. One suspect attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended,” said Dlamini.

The arrested suspect cooperated with officers and led them to Isando, where a hijacked Scania truck was recovered.

Three more suspects were found in the vicinity with the truck and the Corolla Quest, matching the description of the vehicle used in the kidnapping.

“Officers proceeded to the address provided, where the suspect attempted to escape but was caught. He was found in possession of a black 9mm pistol,” Dlamini confirmed.

During the operation, officers also confiscated seven vehicle registration plates, six driving licences, three passports, four pairs of gloves, three reflective jackets, three work suits, four different car keys, and two SAPS dockets believed to have been unlawfully obtained.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 42, were detained at Kempton Park Police Station.

They are facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, illegal possession of a firearm, kidnapping, and possession of stolen property.

They are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
