Illicit drugs worth R200 000 seized in Kempton Park operation

EMPD officers discovered seven wrapped boxes containing raw khat, a prohibited substance commonly referred to as the “Somalian drug”.

Two foreign nationals were arrested and illicit substances valued at approximately R200 000 were seized during a joint law enforcement operation in Kempton Park on December 18.

The EMPD’s Community Liaison Unit (CLU) offices and the Northern Region Task Team, in collaboration with the Gauteng Traffic High Priority Crime Unit, acted on a tip-off regarding suspects allegedly transporting drugs in the area.

According to information received, officers responded swiftly and intercepted a silver-grey Honda vehicle on Tungsten Road in Isando that matched the description provided.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of seven wrapped boxes containing raw khat, a prohibited substance commonly referred to as the “Somalian drug”.

The seized substances were taken to Arwyp Hospital for weighing, where they were confirmed to have an estimated street value of R200 000.

The two suspects, aged 37 and 39, were arrested and detained at the Kempton Park Police Station. They are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
