Ekurhuleni police boost by-law operations and public awareness programmes

Two suspects were arrested during EMPD by-law operations, while unsafe food, fireworks compliance issues and community needs were also addressed metro-wide.

The EMPD, in collaboration with other stakeholders, has recently conducted by-law enforcement campaigns and community outreach programmes.

Along with Environmental Health inspectors and other Eastern Region precincts and units, they conducted a strategic operation in the Springs area that resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the confiscation of goods unfit for human consumption.

During the operation, officers received information about illegal activities taking place on 3rd Avenue in Springs.

A search revealed that one suspect was in possession of three packets of crystal meth, with an estimated street value of R5 200.

The second suspect stated that he had no identification and claimed not to be a South African national, which he said was the reason he attempted to flee.

Both suspects were arrested and detained at Springs Police Station and are expected to appear soon in the Magistrate’s Court.

In addition, officers visited several supermarkets at the Springs Taxi Rank, where food items deemed unfit for human consumption were confiscated and disposed of. The estimated value of the confiscated goods is R6 000.

Fireworks awareness conducted in Kempton Park and Edenvale

Officers from the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit conducted a fireworks awareness campaign in the Kempton Park and Edenvale areas.

In light of the festive season and New Year celebrations, officers educated members of the public and traders on compliance requirements relating to the sale, possession, and distribution of fireworks.

“The awareness campaign focused on adherence to applicable legislation and municipal by-laws,” said EMPD media liaison officer Katlego Mphahlele.

Social Crime Prevention Unit donates clothing in Benoni and Brakpan

Officers from the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit, together with the Xaba Foundation, donated clothing to communities in need.

The initiative began on Christmas Eve, when officers and the Xaba Foundation distributed clothing to residents of an informal settlement within the city.

In the spirit of giving, the officers and their stakeholders continued the initiative and donated additional clothing to residents of the Mkhancwa informal settlement.
