Kempton Park taxi driver arrested for drunk driving with passengers

EMPD officers stopped a fully loaded minibus taxi on the R21 and arrested the driver after a breathalyser test revealed excessive alcohol levels.

The EMPD Overloads Unit arrested a taxi driver for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance while transporting passengers for reward in Kempton Park on February 14.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said officers doing morning law-enforcement duties on the R21 and Voortrekker Road stopped a Toyota minibus taxi carrying a full load of passengers.

While interacting with the driver, officers detected a strong smell of alcohol and asked him to do a breathalyser test.

“The results came back with a reading of 0.16g per 100ml, exceeding the legal limit for professional drivers,” said Thepa.

The driver was transported to the nearest hospital for blood samples to be drawn and later detained at the Kempton Park Police Station. He will soon appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
