SAPS divers recover two bodies from Gauteng waterways

SAPS Ekurhuleni Water Policing and Diving Services recovered two decomposed bodies in separate incidents on February 14 — one in a Boksburg quarry and another in the Blesbokspruit river in Ratanda.

SAPS Ekurhuleni Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) divers responded to two separate incidents in Gauteng and recovered two bodies on February 14.

At noon, they responded to a call about a body in a quarry near Champion Street, Cason, Boksburg. A decomposed body of an adult female had been hooked by a fisherman, leading to the recovery.

An hour later, members were deployed to the Blesbokspruit in Ratanda for a body floating in the river. The badly decomposed body of an adult was removed.

“No matter how many warnings are published, incidents like these above keep reoccurring. The inherent dangers of rivers, water bodies and dams demand continuous attention,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the Benoni Flying Squad and SAPS Gauteng WPDS spokesperson.

“Individuals intending to traverse rivers are urged to do so exclusively at dedicated bridges, as accidents often stem from victims being swept away by rapid currents.”

These cases are under investigation.

Individuals with information on these incidents can call the relevant SAPS station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
