R2.8m worth of drugs intercepted at ORT International Airport

Eight large boxes containing dagga worth an estimated R672 000 were discovered on a consignment shipped from Morocco.

Police stationed at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) seized drugs with an estimated street value of R2.8 million during operations conducted this week.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the first discovery was made on March 4 during routine operations at a cargo warehouse at the airport.

“Police uncovered crystal meth with an estimated street value of R2.2 million that had been concealed among cargo.

“The consignment was destined for the Philippines from South Africa,” said Mathe.

In a separate incident on March 5, police made a second drug bust at another cargo warehouse at the airport.

“Eight large boxes containing dagga worth an estimated R672 000 were discovered. The consignment had been shipped from Morocco and was destined for South Africa,” Mathe added.

The drugs were confiscated, and investigations are continuing as police work to identify and trace those responsible for the trafficking of the consignments.
