Increase in burglaries prompts safety warning in Norkem Park

Police also raised concerns over abandoned buildings in the area, which are allegedly being used by criminals as hiding places.

Norkem Park SAPS has issued a warning to residents following an increase in burglary cases reported within the precinct, with Van Riebeeck Park identified as one of the most affected areas.

According to Sergeant Portia Mkhondo, reports indicate that most of the incidents occur between 20:00 and 03:00.

Community members are urged to remain particularly vigilant during these hours and to ensure that homes, garages, gates, and all other entry points are properly secured.

Police have also raised concern over abandoned buildings in the area, which are allegedly being used by criminals as hiding places and planning spots for criminal activity.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious individuals, unlawfully occupied abandoned properties, or criminal activity to the police immediately.

The community is further urged to work closely with SAPS and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) through street patrols, neighbourhood watches, and private security initiatives.

Residents are also advised to secure their properties, avoid leaving valuables in plain sight, and report any suspicious movements.

Authorities say that through stronger cooperation between residents and police, crime levels can be reduced and a safer environment created for all.
