Community rise alliance fixes dangerous potholes on 4th Road in Bredell with local support

Community Rise Alliance (CRA) come together to fix potholes.

After feeling their concerns were not being heard, members of the Community Rise Alliance (CRA) in Bredell and Pomona took matters into their own hands on February 21 and 22, repairing potholes along 4th Road in Bredell.

The damaged road had posed a safety risk to both motorists and pedestrians.

Determined to prioritise community safety, CRA members dedicated their weekend to fixing the potholes and improving driving conditions.

Despite challenges, including unfavourable weather, the group persevered with donations and support from local businesses and residents.

The repairs were completed over two days, with volunteers also managing traffic to ensure motorists could pass safely without major delays.

Among the sponsors was Deon Koch from Engen Avonlea Motors, who said supporting the initiative aligned with his business values.

“We decided to help because it’s simply part of what we do. Giving back to the community has always been one of our core values, and we believe in stepping up whenever there is a need.

“We take that obligation seriously if we have the ability to change anything, even a tiny bit. We proudly uphold the commitment to support the community wherever we can, making it more than just a duty,” said Koch.

CRA member John Gunning said the initiative was not politically motivated but centred purely on community safety.

“As a community, we want to make sure that we have safety for everybody, people walking and motorists using this road. If our council can’t do it, we will.

“We are not interested in politics; we are interested in the community. We do not care about race; we care about fixing problems that are right in front of us,” he said.

“We will do it through donations and our own efforts. Those who want to join are welcome. The bottom line is that it’s for the community.

“It’s our area, and we are all accountable. Rather than complain, join and help. If you wish to complain, then complain about the work we are doing to make everyone’s lives better and keep everybody safe.”

Gunning added that there were no egos involved in the project, only a willingness to contribute time, effort or resources.
Although rain threatened to disrupt the work, conditions eased enough for volunteers to complete the repairs.

Some sponsors provided breakfast and lunch for the workers, while others contributed materials required for the project.
Hugo Kotzé, director of Industech, said the condition of the road had prompted him to assist.

“The way CRA initiates projects, from road signs to painting and fixing potholes, encouraged me to help where I could.

“We all use this road, and its condition poses a danger to the community. Doing something for the community is the right thing to do,” he said.

Kotzé added that such initiatives should serve as an example and encouraged broader community involvement.

CRA member Amelia Catto expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the project, including Jamie from +Plus, Deon Koch from Engen Avonlea Motors, Hugo Kotzé from ITD Industech, Warren Tindale, Jaydene Rae from SPICED, Bredell Gas and Hardware, Gavin Olivier and other supporters.

The weekend effort highlighted what can be achieved when residents and businesses unite to address safety concerns within their community.
